Finding the Right Life Insurance Company
Buying a life insurance policy is a long term investment. Yep, there’s no doubt about! That’s why it’s so very important to know if the company you’re considering entrusting your money with is financially stable and a good fit for you.
Will your insurer be able to honor their obligations upon your demise? Will the company you are considering offer you the best premiums for your particular medical situation?
Insurers have different business models, offer different products and don’t necessarily adhere to the same underwriting guidelines.
If you’re considering American Amicable Life Insurance, the first step is to determine if this is the insurer for you.
You may find that you would be better served by another company.
Underwriting Guidelines Differ From Company to Company
Did you know that each life insurance company has its own unique focus when it comes to their underwriting guidelines? Many companies vie for a specific market niche and make offers they feel will overshadow their competitors. Some insurers are very rigid for a variety of health issues while others may be lenient.
That’s why you need to work with an independent life insurance agent who knows the ins and outs of the underwriting processes of each company.

More About American Amicable Life Insurance Company
Right off the bat, the company describes itself as a “progressive special markets insurer.” This is an important clue that speaks volumes about the company and its focus.
American Amicable Life Insurance has a longstanding history and can trace its roots back to 1910 when it was first known as American Amicable Life Insurance Company of Texas.
The company has been financially stable since its inception, growing and expanding into markets such as annuities after it became a part of the American-Amicable Group.
In 2010, the American-Amicable Group was acquired by Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc.
Every policyholder should know the financial rating of the insurer they are considering.
This information is available through a variety of rating agencies.
You need to ensure that the company you pick will honor a claim made by your beneficiaries.
…and don’t forget, financial ratings vary yearly, which means it’s a good idea to keep abreast of the latest information.
The general rule of thumb is that a good financial rating means the insurer is financially stable and will likely remain so for the immediate future. A low or poor financially rating should stand out like a great big red flag.

Ok well now that you’ve established the fact that American Amicable Life Insurance is financially stable – let’s discuss their offering in a bit more detail.
I’m going to be frank, American Amicable Life insurance products are VERY SPECIALIZED!
This is not to say that I have an issue with that approach at all. It’s just that these products may NOT BE SUITABLE for the life insurance needs of the average American.
Their life insurance line is excellent, but should only be considered by those with specific needs.
If you’re considering American Amicable Life Insurance, please give us a call at Huntley Wealth, chances are there’s another insurer that will better match your needs.
American Amicable Specialties:
- Final Expense Life Insurance
- No Medical Life Insurance
- Permanent Life Insurance
American Amicable Offers:
- Final Expense – Whole Life Insurance
- Simplified Issue Term Life Insurance
- Universal Life Insurance
- Modified Life Insurance
So let’s take a closer look at what American Amicable Life Insurance Company has to offer now!
Final Expense — Typical Whole Life
American Amicable Life Insurance of Texas states that it offers “multiple death benefit plans” which you can qualify for based on your health history.
However, they don’t specify the amounts of coverage or provide any detailed information about these plans.
This is information you NEED before you apply for life insurance. In other words, you’ll have to speak to an American Amicable Life Insurance agent to ascertain these details.
What we do know is, American Amicable Life Insurance offers policies to those ages 0 – 85. Please note these ages vary from state to state.
- No Medical Exam or blood work
- No cost accelerated benefits including terminal illness and confined care
- Premiums and death benefits are fixed
- Cash value accumulation feature is included
Ok – I’m not interested in final expense life insurance. I’d prefer traditional term life insurance. What does American Amicable Life Insurance Company have to offer me? Let’s check out their two options now!
Simplified Issue Term Life Insurance — Option 1
American Amicable Life Insurance’s first option is No-Medical Term. The features of this product include:
- No medical exam or blood work required
- Several different term periods available (the site doesn’t specify term lengths)
- Coverage from $25,000 – $250,000
- Convertible to a permanent policy with no evidence of insurability required
Association Term Life Insurance — Option 2
American Amicable Life Insurance has a second term offering. Association Term Life Insurance is actually a Group Plan offered to people 18 – 65 years of age. The features of this product are as follows:
- No medical exam or blood work required
- 10 Year Renewable Terms
This plan is only available to the following groups of employees:
- All Government Employees
- First Responders which include police officers, firemen and emergency medical personnel
- State Funded Educational Institution Employees
- Hospital and Railroad Employees
So what if I would like to purchase a universal life policy? American Amicable Life Insurance Company has two options for you!
Non-Medical Universal Life — Option 1
The first option that American Amicable Life Insurance company has to offer is Non-Medical Universal Life. Let’s check out the features:
- Coverage from $25,000 – $250,000
- No medical exam or blood work required
- Provides flexible premiums and an adjustable benefit life insurance contract
- 15-year no-lapse guarantee as long as minimum premiums are paid
Fully Underwritten Universal Life — Option 2
The second option that American Amicable Life Insurance Company has to offer is a fully underwritten Universal Life policy, which does require a medical exam, blood work and a health questionnaire.
The other features of this policy include:
- Flexible Premiums
- Adjustable benefit life insurance contract
- No stated maximum coverage amount
- No lapse guarantee provided minimum premium is paid
So there is one more option – American Amicable Life Insurance Company offers Modified Life. Hmmm. What’s that? Let’s take a look!
Ok I am going to be honest, this one left me scratching my head bit. The American Amicable Life Insurance website describes this product as:
“Life insurance products combined with a cash value accumulation option. Whole Life or Term insurance options are available.”
That’s it! There’s no more information about what this product entails. To be frank this is a VERY vague description.
Personally, I would like to see a lot more information about this product before I would even begin to consider it. Potential customers have no idea what is being offered or how much it will cost.
Basically, if you want to know what they are offering, you must speak to an American Amicable Life Insurance agent. I’m not a fan of this approach and prefer transparency.
3 Potential Problems You Might Face
Now that we know more about American Amicable Life Insurance and their offerings, it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty.
I’m going to share some insider information as to how they stack up to other companies we work with here at Huntley Wealth.
American Amicable does have a rather interesting and unique array of life insurance products.
That being said, I have to bring attention to 3 potential problems you may encounter if you choose them.
1) Too Specialized
As I mentioned above, American Amicable Life Insurance Company of Texas offers mostly specialized life insurance products.
With the exception of the fully underwritten Universal policy, their products can be summarized as no medical exam life insurance, final expense life insurance, simplified term insurance and group term life insurance.
A WORD OF CAUTION!
All of the above policies, which don’t require a medical exam or blood work, have limitations. The underwriting approach requires that you respond to a series of health questions.
Although no medical exam policies are convenient and relatively easy to obtain, you have to be careful about applying if you have certain health issues.
Answering yes to questions about targeted conditions may result in your application being declined.
The American Amicable Life Insurance Company seems to be more conservative in its underwriting approach and tends to favor approving healthy individuals over those with medical problems.
This is true for many insurers offering no medical exam life insurance.
…but there are exceptions.
If you decide you want or need to apply for a no medical exam policy, we recommend that you always use an independent life insurance agent. We know which companies are more lenient for specific health conditions.
You’re also limited in terms of the cost of your premiums. American Amicable will rate you and you have to pay the premiums they decide to charge you.
My best advice is to shop around. You will save thousands over a 10, 20 or 30 year term.
Independent agents like the ones here at Huntley Wealth can access dozens of the top rated life insurers in America…
…so we have no doubt that we can pinpoint the best possible rates for your particular circumstances!
The benefit that most individuals are interested in with a no medical exam policy is the time required to obtain coverage. A policy that requires an exam will take as long as four to six weeks before the policy begins because consumers must first see a doctor and have reports sent to the insurance provider. The insurance provider will then start the underwriting process and give a final cost to consumers. Consumers fill out the final paperwork and then coverage begins. 2) Face Value Coverage Limits Are Too Low
Another problem I see with American Amicable Life Insurance Company of Texas is that their coverage amounts are low.
Most of their no medical exam policies are limited to $250,000. For many of you, this ceiling doesn’t offer enough protection. The last thing you want to be is underinsured!
Companies that provide no medical exam policies typically offer lower face values. If you want more coverage with American Amicable Life Insurance, you will have to buy a 2nd policy to make up the difference.
This is another reason why you should always use an independent agent when you buy life insurance.
For example, here at Huntley Wealth, we know of only 1 company that offers a $1,000,000 No Exam life insurance policy.
We can help you find no medical exam policies with much higher face amounts than those offered by American Amicable Life Insurance Company.
3) I Don’t Recommend Consulting a Single Company Insurer
If you’ve been reading my articles, you’re well aware that I’m not a fan of looking to only one company for your life insurance needs. In order to take control of your premiums and coverage you should really play the field.
American Amicable Life Insurance Company policies are limited in scope and quite obviously their site doesn’t really provide an abundance of information about what they offer.
As an independent life insurance agent, I can tell you that it’s important to compare companies. This is really the only way to find out if the premium quote you receive from American Amicable Life Insurance Company is the best one for you.
I’d bet dollars to doughnuts it’s not…and that we can find you a lower quote.
