But guess what?

Hey, that’s why I’m writing these reviews — to save you money and connect you with the right company!
Performing an extensive amount of research before settling on an insurer is always recommended. So ditch those other Safeco Insurance Reviews and DIG in!
One Size Doesn’t Fit All!
If you select the wrong company, you could potentially pay too much, receive poor coverage, struggle with incompetent customer support – or you may even have to deal with all of the above.
Below, I’m gonna share the good, bad and the ugly when it comes to Safeco Insurance!
BUUUUT before I get started…
So What Products Does Safeco Insurance Sell?
Let’s check ’em out now – but before we do – a word to the wise:
Buyer Beware: You’re going to have to contact an independent Safeco insurance agent if you want to purchase a policy from them. This isn’t the case with all companies.
Don’t worry, they’re not all bad.
Working with an agent is helpful for those clients who aren’t entirely sure what sort of policy they want.
However, for those that know exactly what they’re looking for, or for anyone that wants a basic plan, working with an agent can feel like an unnecessary step.
…and we all hate unnecessary steps.
That being said, it’s a good way to prevent people from buying the wrong products.

Despite the fact that Safeco Insurance has a wonderful reputation, I still recommend that you perform your due diligence.
- Financial strength
- Accident forgiveness
- Diminishing deductibles
- 24 hour customer support
Wow Chris, looks like Safeco Insurance is a GREAT option!
Yes there are some good aspects – let’s go through the highlights – bearing in mind we haven’t gotten to the ugly yet 😉
If you’ve read any of my reviews, you’ll note that I always stress that you should DO YOUR HOMEWORK if you want to get the best possible deal.
This is the only way you can be sure to get a policy that works for you in every way. Remember, insurance is NEVER a one size fits all deal.
So let’s talk about where Safeco Insurance Company excels!
Safeco Insurance: They’re Financially Strong!
Good news! Safeco Insurance is financially stable – to say the least!
Across the board – rating agencies give them lots of love.
That’s right, you won’t have to worry about this company going broke!
Which means their offering is top notch, when it comes to your peace of mind. Who wants to worry about making a claim?
Bet you’re wondering why is this is so important….
A good nights sleep is worth a lot…
Well, the financial strength of a company is a good indication of how they deal with their bottom line. An insurance company that has a strong foundation is a far safer bet than one that doesn’t.
Let’s face it, companies with an excellent rating in this category consistently payout on claims.
I highly recommend that you refer to rating agencies like A.M. Best as a resource to determine the financial strength of the insurance company you choose BEFORE you sign on the dotted line. As mentioned above, Safeco Insurance is very strong in this department.
Nerd Wallet even ranks them on their list of the best car insurance companies: Safeco Insurance came in at #16 with 4 stars.
This insurer is backed by Liberty Mutual Insurance, which is ranked in the Fortune 100 list of top U.S. corporations.
Here are a few of Safeco Insurance’s financial strength ratings from some of the top agencies:
- A.M. Best Company gave Safeco Insurance an A (excellent) rating
- Moody’s Investor Service gave Safeco Insurance an A2 (good) rating
- Standard & Poor’s gave Safeco Insurance an A- (strong) rating
Safeco Insurance: Accident Forgiveness
Have you ever been in a fender bender?
You know the ones I am talking about – you don’t slow down fast enough at a red light and you tap the bumper of the car in front of you. There are no injuries or serious structural issues – BUT you still had to exchange insurance information.
Boom! Now your premiums are gonna go up. Damn!
NOT SO with Safeco Insurance.
They provide a unique feature called accident forgiveness – heck, no one’s perfect.
With accident forgiveness, your rates won’t increase from as the result of your first accident so long as you keep a clean driving record for a set number of years. WHOOT! Win – win.
Accident forgiveness is a feature of an auto insurance policy which protects your driving record from being affected by the insurance company’s rating system for an “at-fault” accident. It prevents your insurance premium from going up because of an at-fault accident. Not every at-fault accident is going to be forgiven by an insurance company. This usually only applies to your first at-fault accident and then only if your driving record is otherwise clean. – Balance.com
Safeco Insurance: Diminishing Deductibles
You heard me right.
Diminishing deductibles is another feature that rewards policyholders for their safe driving.
That’s how it should be, don’t ya think?
For every year you don’t make an insurance claim, you’ll save save $100 on your collision deductible.
…But don’t get too excited — this feature maxes out at $500!
Plus it may not be as great of a deal as you might think:
The most obvious catch is that it costs more. Car insurers usually offer deductible discounts through their higher-dollar plans. – Fox News
24 Hour Customer Support
Life happens 24/7 and Safeco Insurance representatives are available for you no matter what time of the day it is. Now that’s a relief!
You can never be certain when an accident will strike! Unless of course you have some kind of superpower…
Knowing that you can reach a representative at any time gives Safeco policyholders some security.
That being said, Safeco has received mixed reviews on their availability and support… which brings me to the things I DON’T like about Safeco…
The Bad: Safeco 24 Hour Customer Support
NOPE, this isn’t a typo.
Safeco’s 24 hour customer services should simply be a WONDERFUL perk.
Sadly they seem to be less than diligent when it comes to the needs of their clients.
I took some time to peruse their customer service reviews and this is what I found:
Customer Service is IMPORTANT
From the reviews, it’s pretty clear that Safeco has relatively inconsistent customer support. I guess that happens from time to time…right?
Well, Safeco’s seems particularly bad.
Many people complain about phone connectivity issues, lack of follow-up, and never-ending runarounds.
For example, Safeco Insurance policyholders are often frustrated that they have to speak with multiple Safeco representatives to get a resolution.
Having to start from scratch again and again with new agents can be VERY irritating.
Furthermore, Safeco has a reputation for taking an unreasonable amount of time to fix issues. This includes longer than average periods to dish out payments and handle disputes.
Sigh – that’s not good…and unfortunately it gets worse.
Safeco is also known for being unresponsive for weeks at a time. You can check out some of the reviews in the Consumer Affairs section on their site.
If Safeco was the cheapest option out there, then turning a blind eye to their lack of customer service might work for some – but it’s not! Safeco insurance tends to be a bit more expensive than the average insurance company, which makes their poor reviews even less palatable.
The hardest pill to swallow are the poor reviews attached to their claims department. This is the last place you want to see an insurance company drop the ball! YIKES.
The Ugly: Safeco Insurance Quote Process
To really give you some insight into Safeco Insurance, I called them for an auto insurance sample quote.
This wasn’t only to help me gage their prices, but I also wanted to get a feel for how Safeco handles their potential clients!
Yeah…I guess I was snooping around…
…just a bit.
For your information, the process of getting a quote differs between insurance companies.
So here’s the dirt!
Please note, I’m talking about my own personal experience here. Keep in mind that this will vary from person to person.
Unfortunately, getting a quote from Safeco Insurance wasn’t as easy as it could have been.
Not only do you need to call, but it’s likely you’ll be transferred to a few different agents, depending on your location.
Their site is also a little deceiving. They provide what looks to be a super simple quote form like this:
But things were way more complicated when I called.
First, I needed to tell the operator that I wanted a quote. From there, I was transferred to a representative who then proceeded to transfer me to a local agent after I told them my zip code.
The agent in my area didn’t answer their phone, so I had to call the Safeco representative again, and asked them to transfer me to someone else so I could get a quick ballpark quote on auto insurance.
I was put on hold for a short period of time, and then connected with an agent who was ready to give me a quote.
Agents asked for more information than I wanted to give
The agent asked about my family driving history and whether or not I am currently insured. They also requested my address as well as a license number before they have me a quote.
Can’t say I’m a huge fan of these requirements, but the more information they have the more accurate the quote will be.
Still, I wish the personal information was optional rather than mandatory for the quote.
All in all, the Safeco quote process is a bit lengthier and choppier than I would have liked, but I can’t complain about the people I spoke with. I also found it quite easy to reach someone without being put on hold for an unreasonable amount of time between transfers.
Show me the money!
All this information is GREAT – but I wanna know about the premiums.
Yep, you and everyone else. This is what these reviews come down to right?
At the end of the day, people really want to know how hard their wallet will be hit in terms of the premium.
Can you blame them? We all have lots of financial obligations, so saving some cash is on all our minds. Hey I am Dad to three beautiful girls, I get it!
When compared with other insurance companies, Safeco is a bit more expensive than average.
Of course, prices vary depending on the person, state, etc.
For example, Safeco is known for having relatively cheap prices for young drivers, while their prices for married drivers tend to be quite expensive. It’s important to weigh your personal circumstances against the underwriting guidelines of the company you choose.
The bottom line? Forget the other Safeco Insurance Reviews…We’ve got ‘cha covered!
So what do I think about Safeco Insurance?
To be perfectly honest, Safeco ranks pretty low on my list of insurance companies.
- The company isn’t particularly cheap – yes, there are better deals out there
- They need to work on customer service
- Their application process needs a little streamlining
- They request more personal information than I would like to give
While Safeco is a very stable insurer, I frankly think there are better companies to consider.*While we make every effort to keep our site updated, please be aware that "timely" information on this page, such as quote estimates, or pertinent details about companies, may only be accurate as of its last edit day.
